Romantic movies and the women's vision of partnership
Koryntová, Barbora ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis Romantic Movies and the Women's Vision of Partnership describes and discusses a study of two generations of women - mothers and their daughters - who watch this genre. Feminist film criticism theory, of which Laura Mulvey is considered to be the main representative, was selected as the foundation for this research. The aim of the research is to determine how the reception of romantic comedies helps to shape conceptions regarding intimate relationships for mothers and for their daughters. The qualitative method has been chosen as a relevant method for providing answers to the questions posed; meanwhile data is collected using semi-structured interviews. The subsequent analysis will primarily be based upon grounded theory, which shows itself to be the most appropriate method for producing the conclusion for this study.
Feministická filmová teorie a role žen v hollywoodském filmu
HOFFMANN, Daniel
This bachelor thesis deals with feminist film theory and the role of women in Hollywood cinema. The theoretical part offers an introduction to second-wave feminism and the early activist period of its interest in film. Subsequently it describes the two main approaches of feminist film studies and their relation to each other. After an introduction to the sociological approach criticising stereotypical images of women, the thesis focuses on the most important concepts of the theoretical approach. Emphasis is put predominantly on Laura Mulvey's work and the issue of gendered spectatorship. The practical part analyses the seventeen most commercially successful Hollywood films since the inception of feminist film theory until now. The analyses focus on female characters and their development over time, which is put in the context of women's changing social status in the United States.

In order to answer the research questions the thesis employs a qualitative method of critical discourse analysis which functions as a helpful tool while reconstructing the image of femininity set by media. Moreover, the selected method serves to reveal latent meanings applied by film as a form of media to affect both behavioural and cognitive individual characteristics. Keywords Femininity, gender, construct, stereotype,...
